With some of the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, we planted our first Wairau Valley vines back in 1981. And we’ve been making wine we love to drink ever since. The Vineyards Based on warm, well-drained stony soils, our Wairau Valley vineyard was first planted in 1981 and is now home to some of the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough. The alluvial soils of our Wairau Valley Estate were formed by the sedimentation of the Wairau River. In the warm centre of the valley – where there’s low rainfall and relatively low frost risk – we can harvest controlled yields at desired ripeness. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are all grown on our Estate. And we have carefully selected 12 contract vineyards in the same valley, which give us plenty of options. Accredited as a sustainable vineyard and winery under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand program, our Estate vineyard is also Certified Organic through BioGro NZ – further reflecting our efforts to bring things back into balance. The Winery Built in 1997 to bring our winemaking onsite and under our control, our winery and cellar door are in the middle of our 17-hectare estate. Then in 2002, we added a specialist red winemaking facility and barrel. Holding tanks ranging from 600 to 40,000 litres, our winery also holds barrels made from both oak and stainless steel, 50-litre stainless beer kegs and 23-litre glass jars. These vessels allow us to try different blending options and approaches to winemaking. We produce a range of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Estate Field Blend. And if you look really hard, you’ll find the winemaking and viticulture barrel of schnapps we get out for the Harvest Concert.
