Glasgow's best fried chicken spots
Fried chicken is a timeless dish made by coating chicken pieces with a seasoned flour or batter mixture and then frying them until golden brown and crispy. It is a beloved food in many cultures and cuisines around the world (not just the work of the fast food Colonel). And Glasgow loves the stuff, whether served with lashings of coleslaw and fries, in a bad, or Asian style. So, as the iconic British band Queen sang in their hit, One Vision — just gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme fried chicken!
Saint Luke’s & The Winged Ox offers a fantastic selection of southern fried chicken dishes. A must-try is their Southern Hen burger, featuring succulent southern fried chicken with pink onion, shredded lettuce, and chipotle mayo. For something fierier, go for Dante’s Inferno burger, made with buffalo hot sauce tossed southern fried chicken, jalapeños, and blue cheese mayo! The lively atmosphere and excellent menu make it a great spot to hang out with friends.
Soulsa Bar & Kitchen is known for its delicious and hearty dishes. Their southern fried chicken burger is super decadent and comes with cheese, a hash brown, salsa, and spicy mayo. The Edinburgh hotspot recently began its Glasgow takeover, bringing us noodles and rice dishes in a funky casual ambience. If you want some fried chicken accompanied by nutritious veggies and herbs, order their Khao Mun Gai Tod, a bowl of shallow fried battered chicken with ginger, chilli, grated coconut, cucumber and shallot ajard, two brothers sauce and jasmine rice. It’s bursting with flavour and goodness, with a nice kick and plenty of comforting warmth and quite frankly a steal at £6.80 (you’ll be hard-pushed to get a supermarket take-out for that price). There’s a Ting Thai on Byres Road and West Nile Street, so you’ll always be close enough to pop in for a Southeast Asian feed.
From Korea and Thailand to the food of Malaysia, and Ga Ga restaurant in Partick. The menu here comes from the Weegie queen of fried chicken, Julie Lin, who you may recognise from shows like Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen. The menu here is subject to change, but poultry is a stalwart, so you won’t be disappointed. We’ve spotted street food plates like mamak fried chicken buns and fried chicken with Sichuan hot sauce and mooli on the menu. On a hot day, you can sit outside the bright frontage and imagine you’re in Kuala Lumpur as you soak up the sun with a cocktail in hand.
This place is ALL about the fried chicken and specialises in cooking it US-style. Try the Nashville chicken, fried in buttermilk, dipped into Nashville spices and placed on a piece of white bread with some Louisiana sauce and pickles. Or take your FC with a handmade waffle and either mac n cheese, flamin mac n cheese or the “big smoke”, with optional maple syrup —- is it a main, is it a dessert? Who cares we’re having it! And if you’re in the mood for more of a snack than a full meal, you can get some popcorn chicken with a garlic mayo dip, optional salt n chilli seasoning and a side of fries or hash browns. Buck’s also has oriental and Japanese-style fried chicken on its menu.
Lebowskis is a go-to spot for good vibes and great food, and their fried chicken is seriously worth a mention. It’s super crispy, packed with flavour, and hits the spot every time. Choose between the house sriracha buffalo sauce, smoky maple sauce with a cereal crumb, hot Thai-style sweet and spicy sauce, or the epic Irn Bru hot sauce with popping candy for something very different.
