British cuisine might have once had a bad rep, but not so these days. You could argue that no cuisine has had a better revival, with leading chefs across the country championing the UK’s amazing produce and ingredients. Here, we’ll be championing them, thanks to this ultimate guide on the UK’s best British restaurants.
Truffle is recognised as Swansea’s #1 Restaurant by TripAdvisor, and with good reason. This independent, family-run local provides some of the most delicious fresh food and always has a friendly service. In fact, even Giles Coren rated Truffle 9/10 in his Sunday Times review, which is no easy feat! The menu changes seasonally, with the current offering starring grilled lamb cutlets with asparagus and pea fricassee, minted lamb jus and dauphinoise potatoes.
TONCO is a popular neighbourhood restaurant in Sheffield, serving delicious food and fabulous wine with an emphasis on locally sourced, seasonal produce. The Trealy Farm Charcuterie is a perfect to start a meal here; it boasts coppa, finocchiona, prosciutto crudo, and bresaola. The acorn squash, with labneh, beetroot molasses and pickled chilli is a fan favourite among vegetarians, while the mussels with ajo blanco, rhubarb and tarragon vinegar are another must try.
Wine & Brine is an exciting vision from renowned chef, Chris McGowan and his wife, Davina. The couple’s aim is to combine fresh, local produce with traditional ageing, curing and pickling techniques. As such, it represents a new and unique dining experience for all. A previous winner of the Restaurant of the Year award, and recognised by the Michelin Guide since 2019, Wine & Brine has received high praise – including celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, who’s previously said the black pudding here is the best he’s ever had!
Situated in a former 13th-century blacksmith workshop in the village of Cartmel, L’Enclume continues to inspire. The talented team share culinary heavyweight Simon Rogan’s long-standing passion for homegrown, seasonal produce and treat all guests to an ever-evolving dining experience. After celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, L’Enclume also received the coveted three Michelin star status in the same year – something it repeated again in 2023. The restaurant holds many other prestigious awards, including a Michelin Green star, recognising its commitment to sustainability. L’Enclume is one of the best in the world, let alone the UK!

We can’t have a British food guide without a pub, and The Dog and Gun Inn is one of the best in the UK. This is an independent dining pub at the heart of the north Cumbrian village of Skelton. After being awarded Best Dining Pub 2019 and 2020 in the Cumbria Life Food and Drink Awards, the pub won its first Michelin star in 2022. Expect incredible dishes such as Cartmel Valley venison and sourdough crusted halibut.
