The perfect places for toasties in London
Now that the weather’s turning cooler, it’s time to swap your breakfast smoothie bowl for a comforting toastie to warm the cockles. Whether you’re in the mood for a truffle-infused grilled cheese, a hearty cheddar and haggis toastie, or perhaps more of a chilli-cheese affair, we’ve got you covered on all fronts. Here are the five best places in London to satisfy your toastie craving!
Morty & Bob’s, named after owner Charlie’s grandfathers, began as a grilled cheese stall in east London’s Netil Market, and has since grown to three permanent locations across the city. Their King’s Cross location offers a diverse menu that spans from coffee to cocktails and brunch to dinner, featuring seasonal dishes, bar snacks, and comforting Morty & Bob’s classics – including their signature grilled cheese toasties. Get your toastie served up the classic way with grilled onions, or turn it up with either njuda or mushroom and truffles. Divine!
Deeney’s is a Scottish street-food vendor well-known in Broadway Market for its flavoursome toasties with fun names like Roberto the Bruce and Lady Macbeth. Dine-in at the hip café in Leyton where you’ll find something for everyone on the toastie menu; from salt beef to roast chicken to spicy ‘nduja sausage fillings. If you’re looking for a crowd-pleaser which truly reflects Deeney’s Scottish heritage, try the signature Hamish Macbeth toastie which is loaded with haggis, bacon, cheddar, caramelised onions, rocket, and mustard. And if you’re vegetarian or vegan, no worries! You’ll find some cracking vegan and vegetarian toasties, too.
If you’re seeking a luxurious grilled cheese, which is bronzed to perfection, make your way over to The Wigmore to sample its famous XXL Stovetop 3 Cheese & Mustard Toastie. Comprised of Montgomery cheddar, Ogleshield and raclette, this gourmet toastie is a melted cheese delight. Attached to the Langham Hotel, The Wigmore is described as a ‘luxury’ British pub, which is reflected in its convivial atmosphere and decadent jewel-toned interior. The Wigmore’s modern menu pays homage to French classicism thanks to the influence of Michel Roux Jr of Le Gavroche and it has an impressive wine list if you’re looking for the perfect glass of vino to accompany your cheese toastie. We’re sold!
What better place to come for a seriously good cheese toastie than a place with a name like La Fromagerie? The La Fromagerie team are cheese connoisseurs, so you’re in safe hands if you’re looking for a high-quality toastie brought to you by passionate cheesemongers! Head on over to this gorgeous Bloomsbury venue for breakfast, which is served from 9 – 11:45am where you’ll have the choice of a farmhouse cheese and succulent roast ham toastie or the vegetarian option of farmhouse cheese and vine tomato. La Fromagerie also serves exceptional Italian coffee, beautiful tea infusions from Toulouse and fresh juice, which makes for a truly continental breakfast experience. Bon appetit!
If you’re looking for a Bombay-inspired twist on the classic cheese toastie, try Dishoom’s irresistible breakfast dish, Kejriwal for a punchy green chilli cheese toastie on bloomer bread, which comes served with two fried eggs. Inspired by the Irani cafés in Bombay, Dishoom excels in creating dishes that are packed full of powerful and aromatic flavour combinations, so it’s not hard to see why it’s a cult favourite with diners. The Covent Garden venue is the perfect place for a breakfast pit-stop before some sightseeing or shopping, and the interiors are absolutely divine – we highly recommend.
