London's top restaurants for Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is originally from Munich, Bavaria, and it is the largest Volk fest in the world, happening every year since 1810. What is it about? German cuisine, beer, and culture. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be in Germany to celebrate. This year, it will run from the 21st September to 6th October, and London is bursting with venues and selected menus that promise to make justice to the Bavarian tradition. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help you decide and get tables booked. Here’s the ultimate guide to the best Oktoberfest bars and restaurants in London.

Morty & Bob's

Spread across London and with three branches to choose from, we highly recommend Morty & Bob’s flagship, all-day restaurant, café and bar in Coal Drops Yard. Vibrant, dynamic, and with views over the canal, this is the perfect location to celebrate Oktoberfest with friends and the local buzzing community. Soak up the beer with a traditional chicken schnitzel from the evening menu, made with breaded chicken fillet, grilled broccoli, fried egg, caper and herb butter. If you’re sharing plates, it’s mandatory to try Morty & Bob’s famous straight up grilled cheeses, with a side of parmesan and truffle fries, followed by a cheeky dessert (boozy Bailey’s tiramisu, anyone?). The bar has a large outdoor space with plenty of seats and cosy lights to accommodate a crowd and connect you to the local atmosphere. M&B’s also offers breakfast, brunch, and lunch options on a diverse daytime menu, in case you want to get into the festive mood earlier on.

Did we say schnitzel? This hidden gem in London is the ultimate Oktoberfest spot. Head over to Church Street in East London and be ready to taste this deluxe German classic with a few twists, all inspired by international cuisines to surprise your taste buds. Flip over to the specials on the menu and choose between the Cordon bleu schnitzel wrapped in Emmental cheese and served with creamy mashed potatoes, or the El Granjero, with jalapeno pickles and Mexican tomato salsa. If you can’t choose, bring your friends and try it all together. Not a fan of meat? Not a problem. There are vegan and vegetarian options for those who don’t want to break the tradition but can’t compromise their dietary lifestyle. And for the pescatarians out there, try the sea bass schnitzel coated with breadcrumbs and aromatic butter. The schnitzels can also be served in burger buns with dozens of sauces, preserves and chutneys to choose from, for a true elevation of this iconic German dish. Already hungry? Save room for the delicious, filo-based apple strudel to down the rest of your Krombacher with.

Let’s head over to West London for a change of pace, and Oktoberfest-it at the carbon-neutral, rustic-inspired (drum-roll!), The Pig’s Head. You may bring your children, your doggo, your friends, but mostly you must bring your appetite and your thirst! Located in Clapham Old Town, these guys have been shortlisted for the best sustainable pub in Great Britain and they are on a mission to become carbon negative. Sit outside if the weather allows for it and choose from a list of draughts, including BrewDog Punk IPA, Camden Pale Ale, and Guinness, or opt for some bottled Beavertown Gramma Ray, Estrella Gluten Free, Brewdog Punk AF. There are also some 0% alcohol options to cater to everyone.

The daily changing food menu presents mouthwatering dishes made with sustainable ingredients, all sourced from small independent businesses. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and get some filtered water – all proceeds go to a charity!

Al fresco Hiver beers with BBQ food

To cover all corners of London yet stay within the sustainability realm, we’re diving into the South and introducing Hiver, an award-winning brewery that could not be excluded from this guide. If you’re around Bermondsey, book a table to experience Hiver’s unique, fresh, and natural range of beers, and keep an eye out for its eventful calendar – you might find yourself karaoking after your third bratwurst during Oktoberfest season. Bottled or canned, choose from Blonde, Amber or the Session IPA for beers, or the Honey Cidre if that’s what you’re craving, and pair it with a bag of nuts (some say it’s a match made in heaven but we’ll let you judge for yourself). You’ll also be glad to know Hiver pledges 10% of profits to pollinator charities, so yes, you can have fun and contribute to a better world. Prost!

Hopefully, we’re not late to mention Oktoberfest is not just about German culture – it’s about socialising with your friends, family, strangers, or everyone you find at Social, in Peckham, lounging in the beer garden. Have a pint (or a half, if you’ve been celebrating every weekend of the festival) of Sunshine Kölsch Lager, and book a table to attend one of the many events and rotating pop-up kitchens, serving international tastes cooked by local talent. The set drinks menu includes an extensive list of draught beers, gins, cocktails, alcohol-free options, wines, and spirits. It’s arguably the perfect place to bid auf wiedersehen to summer.
