There’s so much more to American food than the fast-food outlets we all know and love… Here in the capital, you can indulge in some of the country’s finest creations, including serious surf and turf platter and classic salt beef Reuben sandwiches. Just be sure to wash them down with a lavish milkshake or root beer and you’ll think you’re actually dining across the pond!
American-born couple Alex and Val started Pickle & Rye as an intimate 10-seater sandwich shop, however after gaining a dedicated stream of regulars, they opened a larger spot and made their menus even more ambitious. Now, you’ll find generous brunch and dinner offerings five days a week, including doorstop-sized salt beef Reuben sandwiches, stacks of buttermilk pancakes slathered in syrup, and an array of juicy burgers and ribs. You’ll also find all-American beers, softs and cocktails including root beer and Arnold Palmers, as well as ever-changing milkshake specials — recent creations included a key lime pie flavour!
At New York Eats, you’ll find generous portions of surf and turf favourites and killer cocktails in edgy, graffiti-adorned surrounds. Make sure you come hungry… Starters feature 10-hour slow-cooked beef ribs glazed with Brooklyn BBQ sauce, while main courses are banquet-style affairs with whole lobsters, hefty steaks in all manner of cuts, and combinations of them all. Don’t leave without trying one of the cheekily named signature cocktails, including the tropical, rum-based Hawaii Hula Hula and the sweet but strong Texas Cowgirl’s Whip.
This contemporary brewpub in Exmouth market might be Scandi-inspired, however its food is undoubtedly American. Mikkeller Brewpub has welcomed Lucky’s Hot Chicken into its kitchens, who create tongue-tingling Nashville-inspired chicken dishes, from decadent brioche sandwiches packed with slaw, sauce and pickles, to strips and wings that can be smothered in your sauce of choice. There are six levels of spice too, ranging from the milder ‘country’ to the fiery ‘good luck’, so you can try it out no matter how high your heat tolerance might be!
When you’re craving a US-style feast, then you can’t really go wrong with a trip to TGI Fridays. The menu spans all manner of American diner favourites and includes a generous range of plant-based alternatives too. You’ll find everything from fluffy pancakes smothered with chocolate sauce and candy-topped milkshakes to all the classics like burgers, corndogs, ribs and shrimp. They offer up brilliant sharing platters too, including the Times Square Big Share, which consists of Fridays wings, cheese and maple bacon loaded skins and mozzarella dippers all piled high and served with Fridays Legendary Glaze, sour cream and marinara sauce.
