Take a traditional Japanese dish, put it in a burger and we’ll name it Sydney’s must-try dish of the week!

It’s the Chicken katsu burger from Ume Burger in Darling Square, and we can’t get enough of it.

Is that the full name?

Yeap, it’s just “Chicken katsu burger” on the menu.

Where do you get it?

Ume Burger Darling Square, 1 Little Pier Street, Darling Exchange, Haymarket 2000 NSW. There’s also an Ume Burger at Barangaroo but they do a Chicken karaage burger, not the katsu.

Why is it a winner?

Inspired by Tokyo’s food culture and with a much-hatted chef at the helm, Ume Burger has become a Sydney institution. While the signature Ebi prawn burger gets a lot of love, it’s the Chicken katsu burger that has our heart, or should we say taste buds? Chicken thigh is hand-crumbed and deep fried to perfection, then it’s paired with shredded cabbage, yuzu kosho mayonnaise and thick, delicious tonkatsu sauce, all in a soft burger bun. It’s juicy, it’s crunchy, it’s savoury and it’s perfect.

Anything else to know?

There’s lots to keep you interested at Ume Burger. Beyond the Japanese-inspired burgers, there are house-made sodas, from passionfruit to yuzu flavoured, as well as soft serve, whiskeys and a cold and warm sake menu. If you haven’t tried it yet, you really should.
