Once home to warehouses, this inner Sydney suburb can now claim to be its entertainment heartbeat.
And with the Sydney Fish Market, Lyric Theatre and Star casino in the neighbourhood, you’d expect that there would be lots of great places to eat and you’d be right! Pyrmont doesn’t disappoint so come with an empty stomach and prepare yourself for a full day of feasting, from croissants for brekkie, congee for lunch and XO pippies for dinner.
The Star has brought tons of dining options to Pyrmont, and one of our favourites has to be the multi-award winning Flying Fish. The menu is a triumph of Asian-inspired seafood served in glitzy surrounds complete with an incredible view of Sydney Harbour.
Perfect for a (very) glam lunch, this eatery boasts freshly sourced ingredients from Aussie and New Zealand shores. The seafood platter is heaped with, amongst other things, butterflied King George whiting and flavourful charcoal-roasted Moreton Bay bugs. Other dishes worth your time are the rock lobster pasta and roast glacier toothfish.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Seafood platter ($230)
The name is pronounced “pee-oyk” and means “the bread” in Coptic Egyptian, which was our cool fact of the day so you’re welcome. With its large window storefront and open kitchen, Pioik Bakery allows you to watch as bakers knead and roll colourful pastries and freshly-baked loaves.
These bakers often combine unique flavours and amongst more common offerings like almond croissants, you’ll find kimchi, provolone and chilli croissants, as well as mind-blowing focaccia, cinnamon twists and ham and cheese scrolls. There’s an ever-changing menu of seasonal options too, with the ruby grapefruit, blood orange and macadamia almond praline a highlight.
We’re not gonna sugarcoat it – you’ll likely want one of everything when you visit, but know that are only open from 7am to 11am Thursday to Sunday. We suggest snagging enough treats to last you the entire week.

Quick Brown Fox might seem like a simple cafe in Pyrmont, but the locals love it for casual brunching and munching on incredible (and we really do mean that) dishes. The Not-so-Benedict is delicious with chilli fried organic eggs, organic potato pancake and bacon, while the banoffee pie waffles remain a sight for hungry eyes: house-made waffles, mascarpone banana, caramel, chocolate ganache and biscuit macadamia crumbs with golden syrup ice cream (and it even comes with a “best shared” warning).
Another firm favourite is the Koshihikari rice congee; a magical concoction of chilli fried egg, enoki mushrooms, maple glazed bacon and charred cabbage over silky smooth premium short grain rice congee.
It’s definitely worth making like a quick brown fox and stopping to eat here.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Koshihikari rice congee ($28)
Another cafe serving the good people of Pyrmont is Calla. It’s not your average cafe, there are no poached eggs in sight, but you will instead find and be forever obsessed by the brown-butter scrambled eggs, and the chilli and herb omelette served with goat’s cheese, spinach and a side of spicy harissa with sourdough.
If you’re into sandwiches, the ones at Calla feature freshly baked sourdough with fillings like spicy salami with smoked ham and pesto mayo, and The Pastrami, which features housemade Wagyu pastrami and Swiss cheese. Vegetarians will be impressed by the ultimate salad sanga with beetroot, carrots, alfalfa sprouts, tomato and Swiss cheese.

The younger sibling of one of Sydney’s undisputed kings of Chinese cuisine, The Century stands proudly as one of the city’s most beloved Cantonese restaurants located right in The Star. This sleek and modern eatery features chic decor and a row of live seafood tanks holding the likes of Western Australian snow crab, NSW pippies, and southern rock lobster.
Drop by at lunchtime and you’ll find steamed-to-order char siew bao and har gow. Come at any other time and you’ll enjoy an a la carte menu of braised noodles with crab roe, beef brisket and tendon hot pot, and live pippies with XO sauce served on a bed of fried vermicelli.
