A ‘tapa’ is an appetiser or snack in Spanish cuisine. Tapas can be combined to make a full meal, and can be cold or hot and in Liverpool, tapas has become a popular restaurant choice for locals and tourists alike. Offering the chance to try a variety of different dishes at one meal, tapas is the perfect opportunity to experiment and explore different flavours. We wanted to help you discover some of the best tapas restaurants in Liverpool because when it comes to this great northern city, you’re spoiled for choice.
So Salsa has three locations in Liverpool, which is testimony to how popular it is! All locations are ideal if you’re looking for a midweek treat at lunchtime. The set menu includes three tapas for £18, Monday to Thursday 12pm – 4pm. They are fairly big portions so three should be plenty! We recommend the salt and pepper chicken pancakes, halloumi fingers and gambas pil pil, however there’s an amazing selection of veggie, meat and fish dishes to choose from so you’ll have plenty to choose from.
Salt House Tapas has become a staple name in Liverpool City Centre. Opening its doors in 2010, this Spanish tapas restaurant has been welcoming customers for 23 years. This is testimony to its high-quality food, great service and beautiful interior. Mix and match from a vast selection of dishes including sauteed baby chorizo, venison meatballs and sizzling prawns. Depending on how hungry you are, three tapas dishes per person seems to be about right and this would be in the ballpark of a very reasonable £11-15. This dimly lit and cosy restaurant offers a great spot to people watch or be tucked away upstairs so you can sit and enjoy the food in a more private setting.
Silk Rd’s concept is to serve small dishes ‘tapas style’ or for the larger groups ‘meze style’. It’s all about the sharing and enjoyment of eating and tasting some amazing flavours, as they have done along the famous Silk Road for centuries! The Silk Rd Restaurant is a concept that brings to life the food, drinks and soul that can be found along the ancient routes that run from the Pacific of East China through to the Mediterranean sea, which means there is something for everyone including traditional Chinese wok dishes, Moroccan salads, halal options and everything in between.
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar housed in a historic building on Exchange Flags, in the heart of Liverpool city centre. Founder and chef Simon Shaw and his team create seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. With an extensive menu of vegetarian, meat and fish options, you’ll be spoiled for choice! You can enjoy delicious food whilst sitting outside in the quiet courtyard overlooking Liverpool City Hall tucked away at the top of Castle Street. It’s a great place for a relaxing afternoon or evening.
The Kassap Meat House is in the heart of Liverpool’s vibrant Bold Street, offering a mouthwatering range of prime fine steaks, as well as a selection of other dishes including chicken, fish and vegetarian options and a tapas menu cooked using traditional Turkish techniques for that extra flavour! We cannot recommend the Kassap Platter enough, it’s got a little bit of everything including chicken souvlaki, meatballs, halloumi, salad, pita bread, hummus, tzatziki and borek (disclaimer, this is meant to be for two people but if you’re feeling hungry, why not take on the challenge?). We’re also a huge fan of the Spicy Turkish Sausage, paired with some side dishes. It’s delicious if you fancy a lighter bite to eat.
Located on the very trendy Allerton Road, Luca is a small Italian small plates restaurant made with local, fresh and quality ingredients. It has an extensive menu including delicious pizzettes, calamari and crispy breaded goat’s cheese. Boasting exposed brickwork and comfy booths, you can cosy up close and share some delicious food.
Located in Liverpool city centre, La Finca is the ideal location if you want to be in the hustle and bustle of the vibrant city. It has an extensive tapas menu including veggie and vegan options, like smokey jackfruit tartar, and giant sharing platters such as the paella board! This is the ideal restaurant if you’re the type of person who always wants a taster of everything. There’s also an extensive dessert menu, which is always a bonus!
Open since 2010, Lunya is Liverpool’s multi award-winning Catalan inspired deli, restaurant and bar in the fabulous Liverpool One. This is one of the most varied and extensive tapas menus in the whole of Liverpool, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. We really love the tapas tasting banquet; it’s so big that the team brings it to your table in multiple courses!
The tapas menu at The Brasserie Tapas & Grill is served from 6pm onwards and includes tacos, beef scouse (a traditional Liverpool dish) and chickpea and feta parcels. This is one of the more affordable menus in our guide, which means you can try more for your money. Set in the Thornton Hall Hotel, this is a beautiful location to enjoy a variety of small plates after a trip to the hotel’s spa.
