Ireland's perfect places to eat out in autumn

Could autumn be Ireland’s best season? Craft ales, Irish coffees and the staple dish of a classic Irish stew all come to the fore this season, so if you’re foodies like us, then you’re excited! We’ve travelled the country far and wide to locate the cosiest places for eating out during the autumn months. Here’s a pick of some of the best restaurants in Ireland this autumn.

Tucked away in the heart of Galway’s West End, John Keogh’s Gastropub is where cosy autumn nights meet exceptional Irish fare. This award-winning spot is all about blending old-world charm with a fresh, contemporary menu that feels like a warm hug on a brisk day. As the leaves turn, why not dive into the pub’s luscious slow-roast shoulder of lamb, paired with carrot purée, champ potato, green pea, rosemary and lamb reduction, or the rich and hearty Moroccan style vegetable tagine that’s practically made for autumn? With a roaring fire and the friendliest of staff, John Keogh’s is the perfect place to gather with friends and tuck into the flavours of the season.

The Glyde Inn

Seafood dish of crab claws

Sometimes all you need is a good pub and The Glyde Inn is just that. In fact it was awarded National Pub of The Year and Irish Food Pub of the Year 2018 at the Irish Pub Awards in RDS. Expect a quality meal made with fresh, seasonal produce. The Irish hospitality here is at its legendary best, too. Plus, with views of Dundalk Bay and its inter tidal shallows, its meeting of rivers and salt marsh, and in the distance the Mourne and Cooley mountains, it provides the ideal setting for a great meal.

Meat and seasonal veg on white plate

The East Room combines local foraging, artisan ingredients and house-grown produce across its seasonal menus. Enjoy an evening tasting menu that stars cod with black garlic, roast chicken skin, horseradish and crab or opt for the a la carte, with choices such as Wagyu beef bavette, Coolattin Cheddar, truffle and onion. There’s also a gourmet lunch with three courses available for €39. We love the roast hake, lemongrass and ginger, courgette and oyster ravioli.

How apt a name for the autumn, the Oak Room is a busy restaurant in the heart of Cavan town. Featuring a changing seasonal menu (changing monthly by the way), as well as an exciting wine and cocktail list, this is an excellent choice for the change in weather. Families and children are welcome, so it’s also a good option if you’re out with the little ones. The dedicated children’s menu has main course options for just €8 and includes homemade steak burger and chips; penne pasta, tomato and basil with parmesan; sausages and chips, and more!

Cunninghams Bar in Co. Kildare is a classical example of what the customer should find in a traditional Irish pub. The exterior is bright and inviting with a well maintained shop front enhanced by original signage and well tended flower boxes for extra life and colour. Although the windows are dressed with Victorian stained glass screens, enough is left to view the old world charm that exudes from within. Inside, the pub is testament to all that is unique in an Irish pub. It is dimly lit with a large open fire and full of nooks and crannies where intimate conversations may be held in private. Perfect for the autumn.

Two plates of mussels
West is a modern take on a classic – a contemporary riff on a San Fran-style club restaurant. Beautifully lit, flattering and gleaming, with a sweet champagne bar, cosy booths and smooth dark wood, West is a proper restaurant, a grown-up room and a reminder of why some things in life are too good to change. All the breads and pastries are made fresh daily by Barbara and her team in the onsite bakery in The Twelve. Meanwhile, Chef Martin O’ Donnell and his brigade cook contemporary dishes with a nod to tradition. Everything is prepared in season and to order, to best showcase this fabulous local produce – true to the region, true to the season; perfect for autumn.
