It’s no secret that Camden Town is a melting pot of all kinds of cultures, which is why it’s one of our favourite spots to head for a bite to eat. As of late, we’ve been obsessed with a visit to Mr Ji’s, Camden’s very own taste of dynamic, seasonal pan-Asian dining. Blending their creative menu and inviting ambiance, Mr Ji has quickly become a neighbourhood favourite.
The restaurant’s design complements its bold and self-assured menu. The interior, characterised by gunmetal greys and modern lines, provides a comfortable setting for both solo diners exploring the inner suburbs of London and groups looking for a central spot to meet up.
On a sunny day, the team will open up the storefront windows, providing you with one of the best people-watching spots in the city. In the chiller months, the open-kitchen flames warm up the space for a cosy escape from the harsh London cold.
Perch up on a seat near the front banquette of the restaurant for an intimate setting, or head down the back to the larger tables for more social and communal surroundings.
To start your meal, Mr Ji boasts a thoughtfully curated drinks list, including a succinct cocktail menu and a selection of low-intervention wines, designed to enhance the dining experience and complement any dish. They also offer homemade sodas, Asahi beer, and an impressive detailed sake list.
As for the main affair, the kitchen is constantly reinventing the menu, choosing to champion UK produce by using day-boat fresh seafood, bio-dynamically farmed vegetables, and UK-sourced meat. All of this to say, you’ll always be surprised with a visit to Mr Ji, but rest assured you’ll be well looked after and itching to come back to try new dishes. The evening menu is designed to be shared, offering small and large plates for the table.
Recent favourites of ours have included the unique prawn toast which combines prawn and béchamel mixture topped with parmesan, their “tacos” featuring tender braised pig’s head wrapped in dumpling skins, and their spring rolls with confit duck, charred cabbage, and orange and elderflower vinegar. We also cannot say no to a side of their smacked cucumbers and house kimchi – both of which are simply to die for. We recommend a handful of small and large plates to share, ensuring you get to try a little bit of everything – trust us, you won’t regret over-ordering when the food tastes this good.
You won’t want to leave without taking a peek at the dessert menu. For a palate cleanser and something out of the ordinary, try their aged bean curd and fermented strawberry ice cream, or perhaps the classic matcha ice cream but with a twist of salted perilla for added notes of mint, liquorice and star anise.
Otherwise, the whole Basque cheesecake calls your name. Once again, this one is designed to be shared (though we would never judge anyone who finishes an entire cake to themselves every now and then). Perfectly creamy, cheesy, and oh-so decadent, it really is a shining star of the entire menu.
Ideal for casual dinners, romantic date nights, or catching up with friends, Mr Ji manages to successfully shine bright amongst the already dynamic and bustling food scene of Camden. For seasonal, locally-sourced and celebrated produce, as well as inventive and innovative dishes, Mr Ji is the place to be.
You’ll find Mr Ji at 63-65 Parkway Road, London NW1 7PP, open for lunch on Saturdays, and from 5pm Tuesdays to Saturdays. Make sure to reserve your table here.
